Borussia Dortmund Bus Bombed for Money

A man has been charged with the attack on the Borussia Dortmund team bus on 11th April which injured two people.

The 28 – year – old, who has been identified as Sergej W, was staying in a room at the same hotel the team was staying. The room was overlooking the street, where the explosions happened. He has been charged with attempted murder, setting off explosions and causing serious physical injury

German police treated the bombings as a terrorist attack after finding a letter which indicated links to the Islamic state and arrested a 25 – year – old Iraqi with links to the militant group. However, the following week, investigators said that there were serious doubts about the authenticity of the letter and a jihadist motivations behind the attack. In fact, police investigated if the letter could have been an attempt to diverge the attention from the real motive and make investigators believe that the Islamic State was behind the attack.

Police now believe that the suspect had bombed the bus in order to make profit from betting results. He had bought 15000 put options on Borussia Dortmund shares and betted that they would drop sharply after the attack. He would then have profited from this by selling the asset at a higher price. The suspect took on a loan before placing the bet on the day of the attack using an IP address that could be traced back to the hotel.
